Since July 1, 2022 Indiana has had a permitless carry option: an adult who meets the proper person standard in state law may carry a handgun without a license, openly or concealed. The Indiana State Police still issue the License to Carry a Handgun, and both the five-year and the lifetime license have been fee exempt since 2020 and 2021. You apply through the state police portal, get fingerprinted and finish processing with your local sheriff or city police within 365 days. School property, secure areas of commercial airports and federal buildings stay off-limits, and private property owners may bar firearms.

The Department of Natural Resources runs one statewide deer season structure rather than unit-by-unit zones. For 2026-27 the youth season is September 26 and 27, 2026, archery runs October 1, 2026 to January 3, 2027, the firearms season runs November 14 to 29, 2026, and the muzzleloader season runs December 5 to 20, 2026. Deer reduction zones, in designated locations only, run September 15, 2026 to January 31, 2027. Legal firearms include centerfire rifles with a bullet diameter of at least .219 inch, legal handguns, 10 to 28 gauge and .410 shotguns firing slugs, and muzzleloaders. Hunter orange is required.

Bartholomew County is where the Driftwood and Flatrock rivers join to form the East Fork of the White River, and the bottomland timber holds deer through the November firearms season. Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area on the northwest county line has the closest Department of Natural Resources rifle, shotgun and handgun ranges.

Brown County State Park and the hills around Nashville start twenty minutes west, and the river bottoms south of town run down toward Seymour and the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge.

Most are free and a few charge a small hourly or daily fee; eye and ear protection are required, users must be 18 or with an adult, and ranges close for weather and renovation, so call the property before you drive.
